Rumors and theories tend to run rampant in the months prior to an official announcement of the next Call of Duty game every single year. That much is true for 2016 as well. Unnamed sources are claiming that whatever the new CoD title will be this year that it will be coming with backwards compatible versions of Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 as preorder bonuses.
This doesn’t seem to be too much of a stretch considering copies of Black Ops 3 came with a bonus download of BO1. The only thing that’s throwing us off, however, is that many outlets are reporting that this deal will only be applicable to Xbox One copies of the new title.
This seems very, very unlikely when taking into consideration the fact that the Call of Duty franchise is now tightly interwoven with Playstation. It’s very difficult to believe that Sony would allow a franchise they’re partnered with to give Microsoft customers a bonus that the PS4 crowd wouldn’t receive.
Then again, the source could be incorrect and the MW1 and MW2 downloads may become available for both Xbox One and Playstation 4 players. That would be the most likely scenario if this rumor even has any truth behind it.
It’s important to remember to take all of these rumors with a grain of salt. We still have no idea what Infinity Ward will be bringing to the table this November. We’ve heard just about everything when it comes to theories. Some seem convinced that Ghosts 2 is confirmed as the next game while others say they expect to see Modern Warfare 4 (which would make more sense if this preorder bonus rumor is accurate) or even a completely new IP (Bloodlines).
Just keep in mind that we have had absolutely no confirmation of anything aside from the fact that Infinity Ward is the developer behind the 2016 CoD. Official announcements tend to come a bit later in the year. We fully expect to hear official word sometime in May or June about the upcoming installment for the series.
